year: 2017 location: barcelona, spain project type: competition disciplines: architecture, interiors with júlia nabona as COstudio
original condition -> regulations: maximum 2 bedrooms allowed -> proposal: 4 individual spaces within 2 bedrooms
'shen': according to taoist philosophy, the energy of mental balance.
the competition was aimed at the renovation of a flat owned by the mental health foundation of catalonia. it is a part of the 'support homes' program, where mentally ill patients are monitored daily, while living a normal life outside an institution. therefore, we understand the project as a case replicable in other flats of the foundation, designed as a therapeutic tool that dignifies and improves the living conditions of the users, generating positive and healthy spaces for personal growth and wellbeing.
the brief asks to define two types of spaces: one for each individual user and a shared space. For the individual areas, the project proposes making two bedrooms with mobile separations to create four spaces with very similar proportions, avoiding the creation of disparities between the users. for the shared spaces, we proposed an open common space that will encourage the relationships between the users and their common activities: chats, workshops and meals.
the project also focuses on creating transition spaces that generate areas that can gradually separate the individual from the common space, having a sequenced journey through the flat: kitchen/dining -> hall -> dressing room -> individual space.
